"Ala al-Ard" furniture pieces offer a fresh take on the traditional design while incorporating new features to enhance their functionality and comfort. The table design takes inspiration from the classical tableyya, a short table popular in the Egyptian countryside for its versatile uses ranging from eating, drinking, cooking, and studying. “Ala al-Ard” tableyya is designed to be smoothly dismantled, allowing for effortless storage and portability. It can be styled as a coffee table complementing outdoor seating or as a surface for eating and playing in casual gatherings accompanied by “Ala al-Ard” chairs.

The chair was designed to complement the functionality of the tableyya, or be styled as a separate portable piece. The ergonomic design provides comfortable and optimal support for your body when sitting on the ground for extended periods. Aside from providing comfort while sitting, the chair also provides convenience when carried around in outdoor gatherings, picnics, and on the beach. It is designed to be lightweight, foldable, and mobile. A cushion could be added as an option.

This product has been developed in collaboration with CLUTSER in BICEIA project, Bridging Inequality through Creative Economy in Informal Areas. (BICEIA) is a project that integrates the designers and manufacturers in Cairo’s formal economy with artisans in informal areas. This builds upon CLUSTER’s research and social design work, along with its existing network with local communities, proposing a framework that ensures fair compensation for independent craftspeople. The project, based on a community of craftspeople in Fayoum, began with a series of introductory and capacity-building workshops, before undertaking a collaborative design process between high-end designers and local artisans, drafting prototypes and iterations to eventually reach the final pieces displayed in the Tajreeda exhibition. BICEIA fosters collaborations that develop skills, market products, and connect creative talent to income opportunities in broader distribution networks.
